WhatsApp is a popular instant messenger application that works on iOS and Android OS, which lets you send text messages, MMS and voice messages between your friends at free of cost. Only downside? It is not to be used on iPad or the iPod Touch. But don’t despair. In this tutorial we show you how to install WhatsApp Messengeron the iPad (or iPod touch). It’s a bit more fiddly than a standard installation, but it’s still fairly straightforward – and you don’t need to jailbreak your iPad or spend any money.
Before starting to install WhatsApp on iPod or iPad, you would need the following:
- A computer – Mac or Windows, any would do
- An iPhone – if you haven’t got one, borrow from someone you know. Alert: you would be needed to delete the WhatsApp on it, if installed already.
- Download iFunBox app for your Mac or Windows PC
- iPad or iPod Touch
Here are the steps to install WhatsApp on iPad and the iPod Touch without jailbreaking:
- Step1: Plug in your iPad or iPod touch with your computer. Launch iTunes, search and download WhatsApp.ipa on your computer. You’ll see messenger whatsapp in the iPhone apps list, but not under iPad. Click to download the iPhone version (where it says Free), and enter your password. It shouldn’t take long to download.
- Step 2: Find WhatsApp.ipa file:
+ On your Mac, open Finder and go to Home > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Mobile Applications > WhatsApp.ipa
+ On Windows, go to C > Users > Username > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Mobile Applications > WhatsApp.ipad
Scroll down to the WhatsApp file and drag it on to your desktop.
- Step 3: Now open iFunBox, click Install App, navigate to your desktop and click on the WhatsApp .ipa file. It will quickly install, and hey presto, you’ve got the WhatsApp icon on your iPad screen. This will install the app on your iPad or the iPod touch.
- Step 4: Get an iPhone and install Whatspp on it (it needs to be a fresh install – you may need to delete it and reinstall if you had WhatsApp already), start it up, and then register a phone number – the one you wish to use with WhatsApp on your iPad.
- Step 5: Once done, go back to your computer and plug in your iPhone. Go to User Applications > WhatsApp > and copy Library and Documents files to the desktop.
- Step 6: Unplug your iPhone and plug iPad or iPod back in to your PC.Again, go to User Applications > WhatsApp> delete Document and Library folders and copy the two files from desktop – essentially replacing them.
Disconnect your iPad or iPod from the PC, WhatsApp would be activated and ready to use. A few people have found glitches at this point but you should be ok if you’ve followed the steps carefully. You may need to closeWhatsApp on your iPad and start it up again to stop it saying that the device isn’t supported.
